Choosing paint colors

Choosing paint colors was quite an ordeal. When we started looking at colors, we realized so much was at play:

  • The beams and tongue and groove ceiling paneling run inside and outside the house. The colors we select need to work in both areas of the house.
  • Being an A-Frame with a visible roofline, the roof is a very prominent feature to the exterior and the colors we choose need to compliment it.
  • The tongue and groove ceiling paneling is currently inconsistent in coating and in color – some of it has been replaced and is unpainted, some is stained and the remainder has been painted a high gloss white. We need a solution to paint or stain it that can make it uniform and consistent.

We started with a plan to paint the exterior of house a dark charcoal but were unsure of what we could do with the ceiling and the beams. After discussing it in depth and looking online for ideas, we decided to go with our contractor’s suggestion and reached out to his color consultant, David vanDommelen.

Working with David was very interesting as he immediately focused on matching the two items of the house that were prominent and we could not change – the oak trees in front of the house and the yellow roof.

David came up with the following colors:

Exterior colors:

  • Exterior Siding: Benjamin Moore (BM) 979/Stampede
  • Beams/Trim: BM 980/Woodcliff Lake
  • Tongue and groove ceiling panels: BM 977/Brandon Beige Solid Stain
  • Front door: BM Semi-Gloss Black

Interior

  • Beams/Trim: BM 980/Woodcliff Lake
  • Tongue and groove ceiling panels: BM 977/Brandon Beige Solid Stain
  • Universal wall color: BM 1493/Morning Dew
  • Back wall: BM 2114-20/Missippi Mud

We initially questioned David’s suggestions but we are very happy with the results.
